Hiding in the (under)wings

Brenda writes: “It’s interesting how much difference a week can make to the demographic in the moth trap. Across the board the numbers are down and I had no lesser broad-bordered yellow underwings at all last night. The exception, of course, is large yellow underwing – 82 today!

As with bird identification shape can be just as important in moths as size and colour, and so in among the 82 large yellow underwings was something different. It was the same length but with a narrower wing, without curve.A dark sword-grass, only my second this year.”
